What the website does

Everything works from the keyboard

The menu, the mobile sheet, the search dialog, the booking flow, the floor plan drawer and the gallery lightbox all open, operate and close with a keyboard. Escape closes each one and returns focus to whatever opened it.

Focus is always visible

A two-pixel lamp-coloured outline with an offset, on every focusable element, never removed. A skip link is the first thing the Tab key reaches on every page.

Meaning is never carried by colour alone

Every table state on the floor plan and the availability board is a word as well as a colour: free, playing, reserved, maintenance.

Motion respects your setting

With prefers-reduced-motion set, transitions collapse to nothing, the page-transition effect is skipped entirely, and the homepage film falls back to a still photograph rather than a scroll-driven sequence.

Real structure, not ARIA patches

One h1 per page, headings in order, landmarks, real tables for tabular data with row and column headers, native details elements for every accordion. ARIA is used where nothing native exists and nowhere else.

Contrast is measured, not assumed

Chalk on slate is 14.28:1 and chalk on cloth is 9.49:1. Chalk on mahogany is 4.55:1, which clears AA for body text with almost no headroom, so mahogany is never darkened behind small text. Mahogany on slate is 3.14:1 and is used only for large text and borders.

Text scales

Reading measures are set in characters rather than pixels, so line length stays right when you increase the font size. Nothing is sized to prevent zoom.

Images are described

Every photograph carries alt text describing what is in the frame. Decorative diagrams are hidden from assistive technology and the facts in them are stated in prose nearby.

Where it is harder work

Three things, each with a way round it.

The floor plan drawing is visual

The drawing conveys the shape of the room, which no alt text reproduces honestly. The table controls over it are real buttons with their name and state as text, and the list view carries exactly the same information in a linear order.

The homepage film is visual

It carries atmosphere rather than information, and reduced motion replaces it with a still photograph. No fact on the site exists only inside it.

The availability board is dense on a narrow screen

It switches to a time-strip and list layout on a phone rather than shrinking the grid, but a table with thirteen columns is harder work than one with three.
